For my first public engagement, I visited the picturesque village of St-Pierre-Jolys, Manitoba. Located in a beautiful setting along the scenic Rat River, St-Pierre-Jolys is a beautiful place with extremely friendly residents. I presented to around 50 high school students from École communautaire Réal-Bérard - a French school.

A couple of days ago, I had the honour of attending the project launch of one of the grantees of the 2011 Y2Y fund. The project launch took place deep within the Korogocho slum of Nairobi. The project launch went well and participants were taken through the details of the project and were also shown some of the final products. We were also treated to drama and music performed by the slum residents. The guest of honour was the German Ambassador to Kenya. She was very pleased with the project

Apologies for my infrequent blogging! It’s been quite hectic here – a lot has been going on! I have been involved in numerous activities in addition to my usual responsibilities.

The 2011 Youth - to - Youth Fund Kenyan grantees were announced a couple of weeks ago. Six groups were chosen this year – all which proposed amazing projects focusing on women’s entrepreneurship development and also supporting the establishment or expansion of green enterprises or businesses.

The organisation LIBA (Lifting the Barriers) has applied for a grant under the Youth–to-Youth fund. Since this organisation is quite unique I thought I would write a little about it so as to create some awareness about the great work they are doing in helping the community.

Korogocho is a Swahili word that means “crowded shoulder to shoulder.” Korogocho slum houses some 200,000 people crammed into one single square kilometer of land. More than 70% of the Korogocho population is less than 30 years old. Prostitution, unemployment, drug addiction, alcoholism, rape, criminality, school dropout and domestic violence are the order of the day.
